Central Park again..

I spent a few hours in Central Park the other day.. Played a little with timelapse and tried out some other things(see 'Central Park timelapse'). I wanted to experiment with long exposures by using a neutral density filter.
I have a variable neutral density filter I use mostly for video. It is good enough for video, but not so good for photography. The filter I'm talking about is the Genus ND Fader Filter, much cheaper than the Vari ND filter from Singh-Ray. Now I know why!
These filters are supposed to darken, and lower the exposure, allowing you to use longer exposure times.
The cheaper Genus Filter doesn't give you an even exposure throughout the frame at least when you go down to -8 stops or so. It almost works more like a graduated filter.
Here is a pano I shot using the Fader Filter.

I am looking forward to photograph a beach using long exposures. Let 's see what happens!

Central Park timelapse

After I came back from Washington DC where I attended Canon Filmmakers Live seminar with Philip Bloom, I still had fresh in mind all that timelapse stuff he talked about.
Cloudy day here in New York two days ago.
So why not make a timelapse? Clouds will probably look cool!
This is the result of 2-3 hours spent in Central Park..

Here is some of the 'behind the scenes'..
(the 'behind the scenes' photos were taken with the iPhone 4 using the Instagram app. I'm getting addicted to it!)

Necklace/camera brace!

Last Thursday I happened to be in Washington DC for Canon Filmmakers Live where DP, Director, and filmmaker Philip Bloom conducted a day long seminar.
I had a great time, and learned a lot of new stuff!
After the workshop we had a fun meet-up in a Pub next door.
We all were with our cameras having great conversations.

At some point Philip Bloom notices my camera brace I was using with my Nikon D3s to film him..

I love the high end gear! However, if you're broke, a student, or just can't afford right now spending the extra money on your video gear, here is an alternative.

It is the Sima SVP-3 Mini, it is only $20, and it works pretty well for hdslr cameras.
If you have a viewfinder such as the Z-Finder from Zacuto, you have an additional point of contact.
I got some pretty stable shots with the combination of the Sima SVP-3 and the Z-Finder.

Make sure you watch it in HD!

The other I was sitting at home, I had just recovered from a couple of days of being sick, and decided to grab my camera and head to Central Park North, just a few blocks away from where I live.

I saw the beautiful snowy landscape, the iced pond, a little duck family, and a couple of pigeons..
Let's make a little movie!

I spent some good three hours hanging out in the park and freezing my butt off.

It was filmed with a Nikon D3s, 50mm f/1.4 and 70-200mm f/2.8 lenses, Glidetrack HD slider.
Edited and graded in Premiere CS5, and After Effects.

Music by Prokofiev ‘Carnival of the animals’: Aquarium
and performed by Czechoslovak Radio Symphony Orchetra.

Drifting - The movie

Hi everybody!

I'm thrilled to announce the first trailer of the movie Drifting, which will come out soon!
Drifting is a collaboration between singer/songwriter and composer Simona D, Jason Verga [Brando from the neck down (2004), The mooch (2008), Consequence, Ed, White Embers (theater), The Refuseniks Trial (theater)], and myself. Ballet dancer Michele Moreno, whom I photographed in a couple of occasions (see Ballerina, and this image gallery) is also part of the great cast!

'Drifting' will take you into the creative life of four artists with different backgrounds and one common path that will bring them eventually together.

The sense of sadness and desperation caused by the struggle of expressing one's talent will be fulfilled by a surprise event that will change the characters' lives.

Fluttering in a world of imagination until the day inspiration will be transformed into reality.

Drifting is a story about life, art and dreams.

It's cold in New York!

Hi folks!

The other day I felt like going for a walk in Central Park. It was cold!
Most of the snow has already melted. This year I didn't feel like getting up at 5 am to see the first snow.
I remember last year though, got up at 5 am, and knew I was going to find all of Central Park covered in snow. Freezing but beautiful!
I took that pano (about seven images stitched together in Photoshop) above that morning at around 6 am. It was worth getting up that early!

Above is another image from last year, It was snowing, and snowing and this corner of Central Park looked just so wonderful with the glow of the lights of the Plaza Hotel and the other lights.
Winter wonderland in Manhattan..

The following image was taken two days ago when I entered Central Park from the West Side on 72nd Street. Every time I walk by there are people paying an homage to John Lennon.

I promise I'll try to blog more often!

Back in August I photographed Juliana and Norbert to celebrate their engagement (see blog post 'Juliana & Norbert). They got married in September, and I had a chance to film their special day..
This is my first attempt making a wedding video. I used my Nikon D3s, a couple of lenses, a tripod, and a Glidecam; for some of the audio I also used a Zoom H4n.

What a wonderful day!

HDR Flatiron

Yesterday, I was around 23rd Street in Manhattan to get a bite at the new Eataly that just opened a few days ago. In my previous blog posting I briefly mentioned HDR photographer and artist Trey Ratcliff, and his blog, his has some really cool HDR photography. Check out his portfolio!
Summer is ending and Fall is getting closer, and that cloudy sky that day just inspired me for some HDR photos.

Manhattan skyline!

Last night I took the ferry, and went to Hoboken!
Here are a couple of shots of Manhattan's skyline..

The wide pano of Manhattan's skyline was created merging 19 images that were shot vertically. The lens used is a Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VRII, with D3s body, and of course, a tripod.

The image above is a five exposure HDR, created in Photoshop CS5.

In the end I edited everything in Premiere Pro CS5 and added some music.

First blog from an iPad!

Hi guys!

Here at the Apple Store on 5th Avenue posting my first blog from an iPad.
I'm trying to figure out whether I could entirely create a blogpost from an iPad.
I like it so far! It's pretty easy to access my blogger setting page, type, link to other web pages, post videos, etc.

Here is a link to photographer/director Michael Grecco's footage of a photo shoot he did with legendary film director Martin Scorsese. Let's see how this works with this blog post.

I think it worked pretty well!

Looking forward to getting the iPad!

Photo shoot Updates

Been shooting more than usual lately, experimenting, trying new things. Had a great session with beautiful and talented ballet dancer Michele Moreno.
The images were made in a dance studio in the heart of the Theater District, right next to Times Square in New York City.
I mainly used window light, and a new light modifier, the Photek Softliter II 60", I was looking forward to use.
In the following days I started working on a couple of images, and posted some on my page on Facebook.
I happened to visit renowned photographer Joe McNally's page on Facebook. I then decided to post one of my images on his page asking for a comment from Joe McNally or just anyone else who visits his page.
Oh Lord, I had the great honor to get a comment on my photo right from Sir McNally.

This will for sure give me a lot of input for creating more and better.

I must say, he made my day!

The image above is a composite of seven images made into a sequence shot at the Skate Park at Chelsea Piers in New York City. The rollerblader in the photo is Tadd Labozzetta.
I had a blast spending the afternoon at this Skate Park, a creative and fun place to be.

I'm planning to go back to the Skate Park and make more images, get more contacts with skaters, and
rollerbladers.

Had also a chance to take a few shots of Parkour guy Milton. Really cool stuff!

Inspirational photographer Joyce Tenneson.

Today I had a chance to attend a seminar and lecture where Joyce Tenneson, one of the most respected photographers of our time, presented her latest book entitled The View.
Tenneson has asked photographers around the world to submit photographs of a view that has somehow, and for some unknown reason, become unforgettable and meaningful to them in a deep way. Rather than simply beautiful landscape photographs, Tenneson is seeking to uncover something about universal perception - what it is about certain places or photographs that for some mysterious reason, speak to our heart in poignant manners.

Several years ago, Tenneson started investigating whether or not there had been any research done on why certain locations strike awe in the viewer, and why these locations are different for each person. For example, why is one person inexplicably attracted to the desert, or the mountains, or the ocean and what are the psychological forces behind this attraction? Tenneson found there was very little research that shed light on this phenomenon. This inspired her to organize and edit a book that includes not only photographs, but also short statements from each photographer describing the personal significance of that particular view. She plans to have the View Project expand to an interactive website where people from around the world can submit photos and share views that have deeply affected them as well.

I found it very inspirational, and a great chance to learn from a great photographer and a great person.

Creativity and its consequences

There are pictures that when you stop and look at them, they grow, and you can go places in them.
I have hundreds of folders in my computer for just raw visual impact.

I don't know, but It seems like in the new era of media that I am increasingly more interested in becoming a more versatile, and more rounded artist up. Still photography will always be the core, but there is just too many interesting things going on right now.
I guess, I am starting paying attention to the web and web 2.0, that phrase has been kicked and beaten to death, but I guess I was intrigued by social media early, and finally started the blog a few days ago. I think this is really another creative outlet for me, and I hope It will grow.

Social media is not going away, I think it will change a lot in the next couple of years, but it is interesting how that integrates with a creative person or with creativity in general.

I think I am most well regarded for fashion, beauty, and portrait pictures, but I really enjoy walking the streets of New York by myself with my camera.
I try not to limit myself from what types of pictures I take, and I don't want to be pigeonholed as a particular type of photographer.
I am really moved, interested, and intrigued by so many things. Without it, I would go insane.

I don't really know where I am supposed to start here, however I am pretty excited to start a blog about my photography! So far I have gotten my website , my Facebook page , and even a YouTube channel, and now finally a blog!

I hope all of this will go the right direction..

I am a freelance photographer based in Harlem, New York.
Photography has been my passion for many years, but only recently I have started working 'professionally', and get various assignments that have taken me to work with fashion, and beauty photography mostly.

The direction I can see myself taking is indeed towards fashion, beauty, and lifestyle.
However, action and sport photography is something I am very excited to explore and learn more about.

Some of my greatest idols are Joe McNally, Chase Jarvis, Platon, Drew Gardner, Annie Leibovitz, Henri Cartier-Bresson just to mention a few.

Well, I hope you will enjoy my blog, and I hope to see you folks in many!
